A Conferência Internacional Walter Benjamins Treue – true to Walter Benjamin?, realizada em Antuérpia, de 14-17 de setembro de 2009, foi o resultado da cooperação entre as duas associações internacionais: Associação Internacional Walter Benjamin (International Walter Benjamin Association -IWBA - Berlin) e a Sociedade Internacional Walter Benjamin (Internationale Walter Benjamin Gesellschaft - IWBG - Düsseldorf), contou com o apoio das seguintes instituições: Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO), University & Society (University of Antwerp) e o Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung, Berlim.
O principal tema da conferência foi a questão da fidelidade de Benjamin em seus escritos e a fidelidade à leitura e interpretação dos escritos de Benjamin.
A conferência teve início com uma apresentação geral do tema por seus organizadores Vivian Liska e Daniel Weidner e foi seguida por duas conferências de abertura: de Sigrid Weigel, sob o título “Fidelidade, amor, eros. Ciência da vida em Benjamin”, e de Bernd Witte, intitulada “Feuilletonismus. Benjamin, Kraus, Heine”. Irving Wohlfarth e Werner Hamacher, apresentaram no decorrer do evento as respectivas conferências: “Folgen (sobre a utilização do conceito de fidelidade em Benjamin)” e Teoria da traição.
Ao todo, participaram 60 pesquisadores em sessões que buscaram reunir a questão da fidelidade sob os seguintes subtemas, conduzidos pelos respectivos coordenadores: 1. Legados de Benjamin (Detlev Schötteker); 2. Materialidade da escrita (Davide Giuriato); 3. Fiel aos objetos (Jane Newman); 4 Conhecimento da arte (Sabine Flach); 5. Fidelidade à letra (Bettine Menke); 6. Fidelidade traiçoeira à citação (Gerhard Richter); 7. Escritos remissivos (Burckhardt Lindner); 8. Fidelidade, política e fetichismo (Jeanne Marie Gagnebin); 9. Benjamin popular (Justus Fechter); 10. Correspondências (Eckart Goebel); 11. História infiel (Paul North); 12. Traduções e recriações (Karl Solibakke); 13. Religião, teologia e rememorações. A cada final de dia, os coordenadores das sessões apresentavam relatos coletivos sobre as comunicações a todos participantes da Conferência reunidos no auditório. Esses relatos foram de extrema importância para o acompanhamento das sessões que ocorriam simultaneamente, favorecendo uma compreensão global das discussões empreendidas em particular por participantes de diversos países, em sua maioria europeus. Os participantes brasileiros foram, por ordem de apresentação das sessões: Luciano Gatti (Sessão 4: “Corpo e narração em Walter Benjamin”); Georg Otte (Sessão 5: “Desvio da citação. Sobre a dialética ‘traiçoeira’ de Benjamin”); Maryson J.S. Borges Sessão 5 “A fidelidade no presente ou a tarefa infinita da reflexão, desafios e limites da escrita de um modelo de crítica literária benjaminiana”); Ernani Chaves (Sessão 6: “(In)fidelidade produtiva. Benjamin, Freud e Proust”); Carla Milani Damião (Sessão 8 “Entre fidelidade e sinceridade. Aspectos sociais e políticos”).
Incluiu-se na programação uma discussão sobre a nova edição dos escritos de Benjamin (Die neue Benjamin-Ausgabe) apresentada por Geert Lernout e composta , alguns dos coordenadores já citados, por Erdmut Wizisla do Walter Benjamins Archiv de Berlim; uma apresentação de novos projetos por: Michael Jennings, Uma biografia crítica de Walter Benjamin (A Critical Biography of Walter Benjamin); Philippe Baudoin, Ao microfone: Dr. Walter Benjamin (On the Microphone: Dr. Walter Benjamin) e Rolf Goebel sobre O novo compêndio Walter Benjamin (Der neue Benjamin Companion).
Por fim, o encerramento da Conferência foi marcado pelo projeto de fusão nos próximos dois anos das duas associações internacionais – IWBA e IWBG – em uma única sociedade. O próximo encontro que celebrará essa fusão será organizado pro Michael Jennings nos Estados Unidos.
Release: The afterlife of Benjamin's writings is remarkable. His texts have kept their relevance, long after the heated controversies about their meaning and ideological stance have subsided. Today, it seems valid to ask whether the question of how to do justice to Benjamin is still, in some form, alive. Or has the time come to document the polarizing forces caused by the conflicting orientations resulting from past readings of his texts? "Fidelity" - Treue - is undoubtedly a ponderous, cumbersome and uncanny "German" word, but that is precisely why it expresses the paradoxes inherent to the process of transmitting a thought that resists becoming tradition. These paradoxes have given rise to indeterminacies that often preclude clear distinctions between fidelity and betrayal.
Benjamin was as familiar with the dialectics of these processes of transmission and reception as he was with the ironies of fidelity. His theory of criticism as well as his critical practice both hinge on the paradoxical impetus of preserving in order to destroy and vice versa. Benjamin remained true to his topics, his intellectual orientation and even his formulations, while integrating them time and again into the changing constellations of his thinking. His fidelity to literalness in translation, the "faithfulness to things that have crossed our lives - an afternoon, a tree, patches of sun on the wallpaper" - his practice of collecting and preserving, but also his penchant for contemplation and attentiveness and its "hopeless fidelity to creaturely life" (hoffnungslosen Treue zum Kreatürlichen) characterize his theoretical attitude no less than construction, destruction and mortification.
Given the continuing interest in Benjamin und the broad range of research into his works, this faithfulness to the material at hand is as worthy of scholarly attention as is the need to reflect on the relationship one has to one's own readings of his work. Does the priority today lie in preserving or popularizing Benjamin's texts? Should we carry his thinking further, historicize it or project it onto the present. Exploring Benjamin's fidelity and the fidelity to Benjamin implies more than an objective search for "appropriate" readings of his work. It challenges the the standpoint and presence of his readers and forces them to reflect on the unique attraction or resistance to Benjamin's intellectual legacy.
